Product Description
A St. Matthew Passion that enjoyed wider circulation during its composer's lifetime than the works of Johann Sebastian Bach — now available as a vocal score for soloists, choir, and orchestra. This edition is aimed at ensembles and choral directors seeking a carefully crafted arrangement. The vocal score consolidates orchestral parts and vocal lines into a playable, clearly readable format.
Choral Sheet Music "Matthäus-Passion" – Baroque Passion Music in Vocal Score
Johann Theodor Römhildt (1684–1756) was a pupil at the Thomasschule in Leipzig and studied under Johann Kuhnau — Bach's immediate predecessor as Thomaskantor. He later served as Hofkapellmeister at the Merseburg court and as cathedral organist. More than a hundred of his approximately 200 cantatas were performed during his lifetime, with documented performances extending as late as 1790. The present edition is based on the arrangement by Karl Paulke from 1921, published by C. Hofius.
The vocal score assumes the full function of the orchestra — providing the harmonic foundation while the solo and choral vocal parts unfold their lines above it. Römhildt's writing is shaped by Baroque voice-leading: each voice carries an independent line, and together they create a dense, interwoven texture. The tempo moves at a calm, flowing pulse that sustains the legato character of the Passion music. Paulke's arrangement stays close to the spirit of the original — not a modernizing intervention, but a practical reduction in service of the music.
Since the piece presents no technical pitfalls in the conventional sense, the real work lies in tonal awareness: playing the piano part with an even touch weight and a sustained legato flow gives the vocal parts the space they need. The restrained energy of Passion music calls for no grand gesture — it calls for continuity. Keeping the breath of the vocal lines in mind while playing will naturally guide you to the right phrasing. Short phrase endings should not be cut off abruptly, but allowed to breathe out — this applies to the accompaniment just as much as to the vocal parts.
