Product Description
Those who explore the Baroque choral repertoire beyond the well-known major works will find a remarkable discovery here. These are the sheet music for the Matthäus-Passion by Johann Theodor Römhildt, scored for mixed choir, soloists, and orchestra. The arrangement is aimed at ensembles and conductors with practical choral experience — the demands lie less in technical pitfalls than in the stylistically convincing realization of the Baroque legato style.
Sheet Music "Matthäus-Passion" – Baroque Passion for Choir & Orchestra
Johann Theodor Römhildt (1684–1756) was a pupil at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, a student of Johann Kuhnau and Johann Schelle, and later Hofkapellmeister at the Merseburg court. During his lifetime, his approximately 200 cantatas were possibly more widely performed than the works of his contemporary Johann Sebastian Bach — documented performances of his music extend as late as 1790. The present edition is based on an arrangement by Karl Theodor Paulke from 1921, who is regarded as the founding figure of Römhildt scholarship.
Römhildt's Matthäus-Passion stands firmly in the tradition of the early 18th century: cantabile melodic lines, clear voice leading, and a well-balanced interplay between solo and choral sections define the work. The legato character permeates the entire score — the music thrives on a steady, controlled flow of sound rather than dramatic contrasts. The tempo is calm and flowing, giving the ensemble ample space for careful phrasing.
