Daughter of Zion, Rejoice – Festive Piano Arrangement
A stately, majestic and didactically masterful piano arrangement of the world-famous Christmas carol Tochter Zion, freue dich, whose sublime melody comes from the oratorio „Judas Maccabäus“ (HWV 63) by Georg Friedrich Händel, with the traditional text by Friedrich Heinrich Ranke. This exclusive arrangement was artfully set by Carsten Mus (CM Music) for piano solo at an intermediate level. The two-page edition is in the wonderfully radiant key of F major, in 4/4 time, at an absolutely steady, proud tempo (Maestoso quarter note = 100). The thoughtfully crafted score deliberately omits chord symbols above the staves and is perfectly suited for learning the modern piano at music schools:
The piece begins in powerful forte dynamics (f) and presents the famous melody in expressive two- to three-part chords for a full sonority. In the score, the first verse is placed directly beneath the notes, while verses 2, 3 and 4 are clearly printed on the right-hand side below the piece. The left hand provides a varied foundation: in the first two measures it starts with calm, sustained half notes and over the course of the piece moves effectively into quarter-note chord inversions, enriched rhythmically by small, flowing eighth-note passages.
Dynamic transitional passages further enliven the piece until, in the penultimate measure, a gripping suspension creates harmonic tension and resolves triumphantly in forte on a rich F major chord. At the beginning, the most important fingerings for both hands as well as precise pedal markings in the first line are included, along with the notation con Pedal ad lib. and simile.
A highly motivating piece for performance during the Advent and Christmas season, with a guaranteed festive feeling!
An accompanying audio MP3 for interpretation is available separately.
