Product Description
"Am Fenster" by City ranks among the most haunting rock songs of the GDR era — and in this violin arrangement, it's easy to hear why. The piece is aimed at players with approximately four years of study: the wide range and fast runs demand genuine technical control. As part of the playbackNOTEN series, it also works well in ensemble settings.
Sheet Music "Am Fenster" – Haunting GDR Rock for Violin
City hails from East Berlin and shaped German-language rock in the 1970s and 1980s like few other bands. "Am Fenster" was released in 1977 and became the group's best-known song. The lyrics circle around a moment meant to last forever — not a fleeting rush, but something deeply felt. That mood carries through the melody right to the final note.
On the violin, "Am Fenster" takes on a particularly clear, singing quality. G minor sits comfortably under the fingers and makes good use of open strings, which benefits the overall tone. The melody spans a very wide range — from the low G string up into third position — requiring solid positional security throughout. Several passages also feature double stops — two simultaneous notes that demand precise intonation and controlled bow pressure at the same time. The arrangement is entirely diatonic, with no chromatic surprises, which makes navigation more straightforward. The syncopated rhythm — accents that deliberately fall off the main beat — gives the song its characteristic drive and is, alongside the range, the primary technical challenge.
- Range: g to b'' (2 octaves)
- Main challenges: several fast passages (runs / short note values), strongly syncopated rhythm
Playing the runs first with a relaxed bow at half tempo quickly reveals where the bow changes too early or too late — those are precisely the spots that need to lock in later. The off-beat accents work best when you keep the underlying pulse clearly in mind while your fingers play: tapping your foot genuinely helps here. The many short legato slurs — fine-grained phrasing marks spanning just a few notes each — should not sound smoothed over, but sung. Letting the bow breathe through them rather than pushing straight through captures the character of the original.
A short demo audio preview gives you an impression of the piece before you buy. Playback tracks are also available — with melody and without — ideal for checking your tempo and phrasing against your own playing. The sheet music is available for immediate download after purchase. 100% licensed — ready to perform legally, right away.
