Product Description
Virtuosic clarinet music at the highest level – the clarinet and piano sheet music for "Round of the Goblins" by Antonio Bazzini is aimed at players with approximately eight or more years of study. The range spans more than three octaves. The combination of breakneck runs, wide interval leaps, and polyphonic voice leading demands genuine technical maturity.
Clarinet Sheet Music "Round of the Goblins" – a virtuosic showpiece for clarinet & piano
Antonio Bazzini was an Italian violin virtuoso and composer – born in 1818 in Brescia, shaped by Paganini, and later director of the Milan Conservatory, where his students included Puccini. "Round of the Goblins" was originally conceived as a showpiece for violin. Joshua Gardner arranged it for clarinet, and Robert Spring brought it to wider attention as a clarinet work on his CD Tarantella.
The clarinet melody – notated in performance notation for clarinet in B♠– spans an exceptionally wide range. The piece is in D minor and moves harmonically through distant regions, which gives the music its restless, demonic character. The articulation is deliberately detailed: short slurs, precisely detached notes, no extended legato. The piano part keeps pace – the accompaniment demands its own precision, particularly in the repeating octave figures of the left hand.
- Main challenge: multiple fast passages (runs / short note values), frequent large interval leaps (sixths and wider)
- Ideal for: concert performance, audition, demanding teaching project
- Tempo: 168 – fiery and driven
The fast runs will feel most secure if you first work through them in the clarinet part alone – note by note, very slowly – before gradually increasing the tempo. For the wide interval leaps, it helps to hear the target pitch internally before the fingering arrives: let the ear guide the hand. The octave repetitions in the piano become more reliable when the left hand practises them without pedal first – adding pedal support only once the notes are solid. The piece thrives on sharp dynamic contrasts: a sudden piano after a long crescendo only lands if those moments are planned as deliberate dramatic turning points from the very first run-through, not left to chance in performance. The harmonically wide-ranging passages remain manageable for anyone who knows the modulation points in advance and is not caught off guard by them.
