Product Description
"Hymn" by Barclay James Harvest is one of those pieces that gives you goosebumps immediately. As a vocal piece with piano accompaniment, it sounds just as ceremonial in live performance as it does on the recording. The sheet music is aimed at singers and pianists with approximately three years of lessons or more: the left hand demands real control, with recurring octave leaps and large position shifts. As part of the playbackNOTEN series, the arrangement is also ensemble-compatible.
Sheet Music "Hymn" β Solemn Classic for Piano & Voice
Barclay James Harvest was a British rock band that rose to prominence primarily in the 1970s and 1980s β with a sound somewhere between progressive rock and orchestral pop. "Hymn" was written by John Lees and fully earns its title: the piece carries the spirit of a hymn without actually being one. The lyrics ask about God, about heights and depths, about what drives people β and the music takes these questions seriously without forcing any answers.
F major gives the piece its open, warm tonal character. The key requires only one accidental β which makes it accessible from the outset. The vocal line spans nearly two octaves but remains predominantly in the middle register, calling for solid breath support particularly in the upper passages. The piano accompaniment is calm and sustained β yet the intermediate difficulty rating is well justified: the left hand repeatedly leaps across wide intervals while frequently shifting position, as the right hand carries the melody. This demands two-handed coordination and a reliable octave span. The arrangement comprises 72 bars including an anacrusis and a repeat section, with the harmony remaining entirely diatonic throughout β no chromatic surprises.
- Vocal range: c' to g'' (1.5 octaves)
- Primary challenge: recurring octave leaps in the left hand
- Additional challenge: frequent large position shifts in the left hand
Practicing the left-hand octave leaps separately β without the right hand β quickly reveals exactly where the position shifts occur, allowing you to address those spots deliberately before bringing both hands together. The tempo is calm and flowing, which helps: the intervals between leaps are wide enough to guide the hand with intention. For the vocal line, it is well worth approaching the higher passages with full breath support β building that support early keeps the upper register relaxed and resonant rather than strained.
A six-page browsable score preview is available before purchase β so there are no surprises. A playback track is also available both with and without melody, to assist with learning the vocal line and refining phrasing. A short demo audio sample is available to listen to free of charge. The sheet music is available for immediate download after purchase. 100% licensed β ready to perform legally, right away.
