Product Description
"Griechischer Wein" on alto saxophone — it sounds like a campfire, like nightfall, like homesickness. Anyone picking up these alto saxophone sheet music should have roughly two years of lessons behind them. The delicate legato phrasing and a few fast runs demand more than simply reading notes off the page. As part of the playbackNOTEN series, the arrangement also fits seamlessly into ensemble settings — a matching playback track is available as an optional add-on.
Sheet Music "Griechischer Wein" – melancholic Schlager for Alto Saxophone
Udo Jürgens wrote this song together with Michael Kunze — and struck a nerve. "Griechischer Wein" was released in 1974 and tells a story of longing and rootlessness: it begins on a suburban street, late at night, by chance. A tavern, unfamiliar faces, southern music — quiet, almost incidental, and all the more affecting for it. The song reached number one on the German charts and ranks among the most well-known German-language Schlager ever recorded — its place in the collective memory has long been secured.
On alto saxophone, this song takes on a particularly warm, almost vocal quality — the instrument feels tailor-made for this melody. The key of A minor stays entirely diatonic, with no chromatic surprises, which makes the entry point refreshingly straightforward. The 2/4 time signature gives the piece a steady, unhurried pulse — not march-like, but rather a sustained, flowing motion that carries the melody without pushing it. At 76 BPM, the tempo remains relaxed and leaves plenty of room for careful phrasing. The melody spans an octave and a half, yet stays comfortably within reach. As a transposing instrument, the part is written in concert transposition for the alto saxophone. The difficulty rating is light, because the harmony sets no traps — the challenge comes from the delicate legato slurs and a handful of faster passages, not from the overall structure.
- Range: d' to a'' (1.5 octaves)
- Main challenge: Fast runs on the alto saxophone
- Ideal for: Schlager evening in a festival tent, senior afternoon event, music school recital
Working through the fast runs slowly at first — one at a time, at a very reduced tempo — quickly reveals where the fingers are still searching. That's exactly where it pays to linger before gradually bringing the tempo up. On alto saxophone, particular attention should go to the register transitions above G5: runs that cross into the upper register require reliable octave key coordination to ensure clean note response. For articulation, a soft tongue stroke is recommended in the faster passages — too hard an attack risks making the runs sound uneven. The short slurs should sing, not chop: hold the bow through to the last note before lifting — this calls for legato tonguing, not single strokes. And since a phrase here can flow across a good eight bars, breath planning is essential — think ahead, and you'll never find yourself in trouble.
A short demo audio sample is available for listening — free of charge, so you can get a reliable first impression. If you decide to learn the piece, a playback track can be purchased separately, with or without the melody. Sheet music is available for immediate download after purchase. 100% legal & licensed.
