"Tante Chinoise et les autres" (also known as "Old Aunt China") was David Perlov's first film, a seventeen-minute short film shot in 1957 on 16mm color film. The film originated in a sketchbook that Marguerite Bonnevay drew in 1890 at the age of twelve during a stay in Gonfaron in the Var department. Her biting, keenly observed drawings and captions about bourgeois life in the provinces – created only five years after Christophe's "La Famille Fenouillard", often considered the first French comic – testified to an artistic talent unusual for her age. Bonnevay died at twenty from tuberculosis. Sixty years later, her niece Marguerite Jungerman, who had inherited the album and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts with Perlov (who was living with her family at the time), showed him the drawings. Impressed by their poetic and satirical power, Perlov decided to create a film around them and to embed the images in a narrative continuity that brought out their full expressive force.

The project was realized through a fundraising campaign supported by an unusual circle of French and international artists, including Jacques Prévert, Jeanne Moreau, Alexander Calder, Vieira da Silva, Árpád Szenes, Czesław Miłosz, Magnelli, and Maryan. Prévert wrote the film's prologue, and Germaine Tailleferre composed the film music titled "Gonfaron," named after the village in the Var department where the story takes place – her contribution came at a time in her career when she was already an established member of the group "Les Six" and regularly composed for stage and screen. The following year, 1958, Perlov emigrated to Israel, where he became one of the central figures of Israeli documentary film, particularly through his later monumental work "Diary" (1983). "Tante Chinoise et les autres" has been rarely shown since its release; a notable exception was the Perlov retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 2005. The original drawings and the story behind the film were later published as an illustrated book by Éditions de La Table Ronde under the editorship of Nathalie Jungerman.
