The work was written for Willard Minton and the Harmonious Brass Choir of Winsted, Connecticut. Andante and Allegro is divided into two movements: the first movement in lyrical ballad style and the second in allegro style. The piece was composed with the intention of creating a work that is not too demanding to rehearse for euphonium solo and brass ensemble, but nevertheless challenging enough to capture the interest of the players and the audience.
The premiere of Andante and Allegro took place on June 6, 1999 by the Harmonious Brass Choir under the direction of Willard Minton.
