70 Fugen - Sheet Music for Solo Piano Johann Sebastian Bach

The 70 fugues in this collection are part of the great musical legacy of the genius from Leipzig. Some of these fugues were created at the beginning of Bach's creative period, some as individual pieces, others are contained in works such as "Preludes and Fugues", "Fantasies and Fugues", "Sonatas", "Partitas", "Toccatas and Fugues", still others come from the two volumes of the "Well-Tempered Clavier" and yet others from significant works.

Furthermore, we have also included fugues that Bach himself arranged after works by contemporary composers such as Albinoni, Legrenzi, Reincken, etc. In the score we have indicated the date of origin, even if in some cases it is only approximate, as well as the instrument for which the work was intended.

In addition to the BWV catalogue number, we have inserted the letter "b", which denotes the second movement of the work, i.e. the fugue, or the letter "c", if the fugue is in the third movement.

Throughout these are pieces of medium difficulty, which vary in all keys. In this book the fugues are arranged according to the catalogue number, practically beginning with the first compositions written by Bach.

The piano transcriptions have been worked out since 1974 by Santino Cara, who has arranged scores for organ, harpsichord and in some cases also for ensembles of string and wind instruments. It was only in 2020, in consultation with the "Barockakademie für Musikpartituren" in Rome, that the decision was made to publish the material in book form and make it accessible to pianists.

Of course, Bach's fugues are not limited to the 70 contained in this book; we know that there are many more that need to be arranged for piano and compiled. At the end of the book we have appended a list of further piano arrangements by Santino Cara of works by Bach himself, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Beethoven, Mozart, Händel, Telemann, Marcello B., Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, Paradisi, Pergolesi, Schubert, Schumann, etc.
