Concerto for Contrabass and Orchestra, piano reduction and solo part - Noten für Kontrabass + Klavier Thierry Pélicant

C´est en 2004 que l´Orchestre Philharmonique de l´Oise a commandé à son chef, Thierry Pélicant, ce concertopour Claude Caens, contrebasse solo de l´orchestre. Ce grand artiste qui ne comptait que des amis au sein del´orchestre voulait que tout le monde soit de la fête et joue avec lui, les cordes, bien sûr, mais aussi les bois, lescors, les trompettes et les percussions , et qu´on les entende ! Thierry Pélicant composa donc pour lui unconcerto à la fois très symphonique - on ne saurait trop conseiller de sonoriser la contrebasse ! - mais égalementune pièce qui puisse témoigner de l´amitié liant l´orchestre à son soliste. Le concerto se veut donc lyrique etchaleureux , il n´est pas un défi virtuose malgré les très réelles difficultés techniques qu´il pose au soliste, etqu´il conviendra de soigneusement cacher au public, il ne sera pas davantage question de faire lutter entre euxl´orchestre et le doux géant , ils se promènent ensemble, parfois gaiement, parfois nostalgiques et affrontent deconcert les quelques vigoureuses tempêtes qui ne manquent pas de se présenter, en souriant et en les trouvant vivifiantes.

La réduction pour piano est faite par le compositeur, mais elle n´a pour vocation que de faciliter l´apprentissagede l´oeuvre. Cette version, qui pourrait être utile pour les concours ou les examens, ne devrait pas être utiliserpour ni pour les concerts, ni pour les enregistrements.

In 2004, the Orchestre Philharmonique de l´Oise commissioned its musical director, Thierry Pélicant, thisconcerto for the late Claude Caens, the principal contrabass of this orchestra. This great artist, who was friendswith everyone in this ensemble, wanted everyone to have a part in the festivities, not only the strings, but also thewinds, the horns, the trumpets and the percussion, and also that they all should be heard ! Thierry Pélicantwrote therefore a concerto which is at once very symphonic - and for this reason, it is strongly advised that thecontrabass be amplified - but also a piece which would express the friendship between the orchestra and thesoloist. This concerto strives to be both warm and lyrical : it is not a virtuoso showpiece, inspite of the realtechnical that it offers to the soloist and which he would do well to try to hid them from the audience. It is alsonot a battle between the orchestra and this gentle giant : they stroll together, sometimes joyously, sometimeswith nostalgia and go through the strong storms which do not fail to present themselves, smiling together andfinding them to be envigorating.

The piano reduction was made by the composer, but is only intended to help the performers to prepare the work with orchestra. It may be used for competitiosn or for juries at music schools, but it should not be used forconcert performance nor for recordings.
