Description "Die Hügel in Grün - Vestiva i colli - Pastorales Madrigal in drei Stimmen"

The madrigal "Vestiva i colli" from Palestrina's fifth book of madrigals, published in 1566, is one of the gems of Renaissance music. This chamber music trio version follows the arrangement by Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde, the Venetian bassoon virtuoso who laid the foundations for solo woodwind music in his 1638 collection Canzoni, fantasie et correnti. The recorder leads the bright, singing soprano voice with delicate lightness, the bassoon weaves alto and tenor in a warm, carrying sound - partly in octaves, partly in alternation to keep the polyphonic imitations alive. The harpsichord forms the harmonic foundation with a restrained continuo realization. The result is The Hills in Green: a poetic miniature in which Palestrina's contrapuntal mastery meets the sound world of the early Baroque - a quiet walk through green hills, carried by melancholy and a longing for spring.
