James Reese Europe was born on February 22, 1880 in Mobile, Alabama. He was an African-American musician, composer, arranger and bandleader who was known forhis ragtime and popular music works. His most famous rag was the " Castle House Rag ",written in 1914. Wellknown as the leader of the musical scene for African-American musiciansduring the 1910s, he was the creator of the " Clef Club ", notable for a Carnegie Hall Concertin 1912.. He participated in the World War I in the 369e infantry regiment the HarlemHellfighters and his military band participated in the introduction of Jazz to the EuropeanContinent. He gave in the first concert of Ragtime compositions on February 12, 1918in the Graslin Theater in Nantes, France. He died in 1919, stabbed by one of his musiciansover a pay dispute and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary.

James Reese Europe, né le 22 février 1880 à Mobile, Alabama et mort assassiné le 9 mai1919, était un musicien, arrangeur, compositeur et bandleader Africain-Américain spécialistedu ragtime et de musique populaire américaine. Europe composa son plus célèbre rag" Castle House Rag ", en 1914. Il a été le chef de file de la scène musicale Africaine-Américaine de New York dans les années 1910. Il sera à l´origine du " Clef Club ",notable pour un concert au Carnegie Hall en 1912. Militaire, il participera à la PremièreGuerre mondiale dans le 369e régiment d´infanterie, les Harlem Hellfighters et sonorchestre participera à l´introduction du ragtime et du jazz en Europe. À ce titre, ildonnera le premier concert de jazz sur le continent européen, sur les marches puis à l´intérieurdu théâtre Graslin à Nantes en France, le 12 février 1918 Il meurt poignardé en 1919 dansune dispute avec l´un des membres de son groupe et repose au cimetière national d´Arlington.
