Prayer of St. Ambrose (2003) for alto saxophone and organ is based on an earlier work written
and dedicated to trumpeter Colby Cooman.
The work is a subdued and lyrical work, suitable for either concert or church uses. An opening
section of unfolding/introduction leads to a gentle aria over a pulsing accompaniment which
builds to a climax. A warm coda closes the work.
The title of the piece is taken from the famous prayer attributed to St. Ambrose of Milan (c. 340 -
397) quoted at the top of the score. The title also pays homage to the famous work for trumpet
and organ, Prayer of St. Gregory, by American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000).
