Elegies (2009) for two horns was composed in memory of Hunter MacKenzie Pope, son of Ken and Tess
Pope. Hunter Pope died on February 15, 2009 at the age of 12.
The movements of the work are lyrical in spirit. The opening movement, Song, decorates a modal melody
with arabesque figurations. The second movement, Estampie, is fast and energetic. The third movement,
Prayer, is yearning and hopeful.
