In memoriam Clafoutis
A Thing of beauty is a joy for ever
Its loveliness increases. It will never
Fall into nothingness . . .
Keats, Endymion I, 1-3
Little ginger chat, so intelligent and adventurous that we called "Christopher Columbus", I dedicate
these fugues to you.
That they should symbolise your harmonious movements, the happiness and serentiy that you gave us through your beauty, gentleness and your good humor.
Clafoutis, aka Christophe Columb, died in when he was hit by a car November 19, 1996 which he imprudently crossed the street in front of our house. He died before his time, a victim of his audacity and his lust for life. November 20, 1996
These three fugues, with the last which has two subjects and two countersubjects were written in the Louis XV wing of the Châ,teau de Fontainebleau during the admission examinations for the Grand Prix de Rome in 1963, 1963 and 1965. They allow me to continue the competition during each of these years.
If I was able to use both technique and musicality through these three fugues and create a certain musical expression through formal exercises, it is because of the teaching of my professor Noel Gallon to whom I restate my grateful affection. (Therese Brenet)
