PROGRAM NOTE
Composed to reflect the mosaic-like design of a collage, this single-movement work for a reed trio
ensemble is notable for its juxtaposition of lyrical melodies with an eerie counterpoint of meandering
lines. In turn, the capricious rhythmic writing contrasts the subtle irresolvability of its harmonies.
While there are times when the instruments coalesce into a musically unified whole, there are
moments when a single instrument emerges in the foreground as no more than a vanished memory, a
consolation long time gone. While the trio remains musically and emotionally direct in its appeal,
creating at times a contrast between the restlessness of unceasing yearning and the uneasiness of inner
acceptance, its performative trajectory suggests an intense narrative from the ceremonial opening and
oscillating feelings of nostalgia and contentment that resonate with the work´s middle sections, to a
brusque, almost impatient intensity at its close.
